The Simplest way to Reduce Disease

By Paula Nernberg

How to reduce disease through simple hand washing

First of all, as an individual of the medical profession, I have seen an increase in the amount of transmitted diseases which are completely preventable with simple common sense and basic routines. We have become a society that is dependent upon sanitizing gels and antibacterial hand soaps that are supposed to get rid of these nasty germs. In essence, we have substituted these chemicals for washing our hands. Even our local hospitals have sanitizing gel dispensers in every corner.

Let me fill you in on something. Consistent use of sanitizing gels and antibacterial soaps really isn’t doing you any favours. They strip your skin of the natural flora which can offer protection. This is our natural defense system. In fact, these chemicals break down the skin often causing small cracks or breaks. As a result, this opening provides a route of entry for bacteria causing diseases.

So, how do we protect ourselves from the ever increasing risk of disease? Simply, wash your hands. Proper hand washing techniques can ward off the common dangers while keeping your skin healthy. Some simple rules to follow are:

1.Use warm, not hot, water
2.Wet your hands thoroughly before applying a mild soap
3.Lather your hands well working the soap between the fingers, around the cuticles and the palms. Don’t scrub them so hard that you break your skin.
4.The general rule of thumb, sing the ABC’s to yourself before rinsing your hands.
5.Rinse your hands well starting at the wrist allowing the water to flow down toward your fingers.
6.Pat your hands dry, again starting at the wrist and working toward the fingers.
7.Apply a gentle hand lotion to add moisture.

With that being said, what about using public washrooms? We all know that many people don’t wash their hands so touching that door handle on the way out makes your efforts pretty much useless.

1.Dispense several paper towels before proceeding to wash your hands. Keep one for after you are done.
2.Use one of the paper towels to turn on the taps
3.Wash your hands as listed above
4.Dry your hands as listed above before turning off the taps
5.Use a paper towel to turn off the taps and to turn the knob of the bathroom door.
6.If the garbage is situated next to the door, hold the door with your body and simply discard the paper towel.

Another thing to keep in mind is that jewellery is a huge carrier of bacteria. If you are immunocompromised, I suggest you loose the jewellery from your hands. Also, long finger nails and gel nails are much harder to keep clean. Although they look attractive, they are breeders of disease.

Although sanitizing gels and antibacterial soaps should not, in my opinion, be used on a regular basis, an occasional dab here or there may still work in your favour if there are no other options. For example: A public washroom that utilizes a cloth towel system where you have to pull on it to find a clean piece to use. Depending where you are, you may never find that clean part no matter how many times you tug on it. Therefore, a squirt of gel may be in order. Remember, all things in moderation.

As a final note: If you go to the bar or night club and you see some popcorn or nuts on the counter, are you going to dive in? How about those unpackaged toothpicks on the way out of a restaurant? A little common sense and the use of basic routines is your best defence. WASH YOUR HANDS PLEASE.
