Shopping online, in many regards, is a matter of convenience. You don't have to worry about store hours, crowded malls, or even spending money on gas or transportation fares. What could be easier? However, shopping on the internet can make us vulnerable to several things such as online identity theft and scams. Being the victim to such acts could be more costly than going to the mall physically. So, how can you feel protected while shopping online? The following is a list of tips to ensure your safety when shopping on the internet. 1. Privacy policies: Any legitimate online business will clearly detail their privacy policies. It should include information on how they obtain your information as well as how they intend on using it. 2. Contact information: You should always check to see that there are clear ways of making contact with any online business. If they are not clearly stated, RUN. 3. Does the site have an FAQ page? Utilize this information to determine if they address any of your concerns. An online business should provide as much detail about how they operate. As a result, does the information provided make you feel secure? 4. What kind of technology does the site use to ensure secure check out? Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is considered the highest internet encryption technology available. Are they using it? How will you know it they are? One way to determine this is by looking at the URL especially during the check out process. If you do not see https: when checking out, do not submit your personal information because the site is not secure. Many sites will have http: in the URL for viewing products or services. However, if it does not change to https: for check out, RUN. The tips listed above are only the highlights on what to look for to ensure safe online shopping. Understanding how any online business operates is the key to avoiding scams and other fraudulent behaviors. Get informed.
