Kennel Training

By Paula Nernberg

Furry Friends

Part 2

Kennel training is one of the easiest ways to train your puppy or dog so that they do their business outside instead of various locations around the house. Puppies are easier to train than dogs but both can be successful if you are consistent and persistent.

First, the kennel is a safe place for your puppy. They should never be left alone in the house until they are at least 2 years of age. They are like little children and will get into trouble when given the opportunity. It is best to be prepared with a kennel before bringing your pet home and it should be the first place you put them when you arrive. If your puppy is young, expect to hear a lot of squawking and whining. This is normal behavior. However, never let them out of the kennel until they are perfectly quiet which may only be a brief moment so be quick. This is establishing a routine and conditioning their behavior. If you let them out when they are making a fuss, you are teaching them to react in order to be freed. Consider a quiet location for the kennel. An area of the house that is free from a lot of distractions will help your puppy relax more quickly when placed in the kennel.

Once the puppy is quiet, which may take several hours depending on their age, personality and persistence, take them outside immediately. If they have done their business outside, reward them with plenty of “good job” statements and lots of positive attention. After their job is done and the rewards have been given, it is safe to let the puppy run around the house for a while. Introduce them to their food and water. Remember that the puppy bladder has not been fully developed or trained so if they consume water, take them back outside. Also, a lot of activity will get their bowels moving. Good rules of thumb, if the puppy has consumed food and water and is active, take them outside every 30 minutes or so to avoid having any clean up.

The puppy may not do anything outside the first time. In this case, it is best to put them back in the kennel (and say the word kennel each time you put them there) and wait until they have calmed down once again. You can provide them with some food and water inside their kennel to avoid dehydration and weakness. Repeat the cycle until they have done their job outside and received their reward. In the event they have made a mess in the house, do not rub their nose in it or get mad at them. It is the owner who neglected to be consistent. For the first few days, you may encounter having to clean out their kennel. Sometimes they get themselves so worked up that they make a mess. This will not happen often once they realize that the kennel is safe and it is their bed. Sleeping with your puppy should also be avoided for the first couple of years until they can be trusted.

If you are consistent with this cycle, your puppy or dog will most likely be trained to do their job outside within 3 to 4 days. However, this is not to say that it won’t take longer. Over several years of kennel training my puppies and dogs, my longest trial was 3 ½ days. Primarily, use your judgment and watch for their signals. Success with kennel training is the basis for your puppy’s future behavior. It is also the least stressful method for establishing toileting routines especially if you have a busy lifestyle. In the end, the new addition to your family will bring forth much happiness.

The next segment of Furry Friends will cover some of the techniques used to gain hierarchy in your canine’s world.

These are suggestions that have been very successful for me but should be implemented according to your judgement.
