Dog Humor

By Paula Nernberg

I guess I missed the boat on Pet week. None the less I wanted to share a little about my pet. Hope you enjoy as much as we enjoy her.

Toora, my female husky cross, came to us after being rescued from a puppy mill. She was riddled with lice and kennel cough as well as a very anxious disposition. The lice were quite easily treatable. The kennel cough was a little trickier to resolve. The veterinarian suggested that I bring her into the bathroom when I showered or bathed as the moisture would eventually ease the problem, which it did. However, after a repetitive routine of following me to the bathroom, she still keeps me company for all my hygiene.

Initially, Toora would just sit in the washroom as I performed my routine. Then for some reason she decided she wanted to participate in the ritual. I am an avid Dove soap user. I particularly like the Energize bar as it has little particles that exfoliate the skin. After washing my hair, I proceed as usual to clean my body. Toora seems to be energized by the scent of the soap herself. With that, she licked the soap from my arm or leg. Perhaps she feels she is assisting me.

I found this behavior to be quite intriguing. Was it the taste of soap that she liked? Was something missing in her diet to crave soap? Hmmm. About a year and a half ago, I ran out of my favorite Dove bar. A quick jaunt to the store was in order. However, they didn’t carry my brand. So I opted for a different less expensive one. Upon my next bath, Toora came with me as she always does. When it came time to bathe my body with the new soap, Toora took one lick and that was it. The look on her face was as though someone had played a nasty trick on her. I chuckled to myself. The next bath I reverted back to my usual bar. With that, Toora was back to herself, licking and enjoying. I have tried different varieties of Dove. All have the same effect on her. So I guess my dog is a Dove girl after all.

I don’t know about you but I really don’t like it when a dog, or animal for that matter, sits there staring at me while I eat. At meal times, Toora may lie on the kitchen floor with her head down but that is as far as my tolerance goes. Over the course of a few years, she came to realize this understanding. No words need to be spoken. One look from me provides her with the correction. However, she is still a dog and will try to get away with things. Meal time isn’t always in the kitchen and with that I think she thinks the rules change. I catch her every now and again looking at me while I’m eating. When I turn my head toward her, she turns to look the other way as though she hadn’t done it in the first place. Others have found it quite funny to watch. The faster I move my head to look at her, the faster she turns away.

Toora often comes with me to do errands. She’s kind of like the right hand man in the truck, so to speak. I decided to stop for a burger and fries at Burger King one day. Since I was alone, I didn’t feel like eating in the restaurant so I opted to eat in the truck. As mentioned, Toora already knows I don’t like her to watch me eat. The smell of the food must have driven her nuts. None the less, she sat quietly and didn’t look me in the face and left me to eat in peace. After a while it became apparent that she was watching me even though she was seated straight forward and looking through the windshield. The sun was quite bright that day. The rays hit the windshield at such an angle that it provided a perfect reflection of everything I was doing. An opportunity that didn’t go by Toora. I didn’t have the heart to correct her for this behavior. So I let her go on believing that she had won. Meanwhile, I was roaring inside.

That was lovely. And what beautiful eyes. You can see Toora's soul right through them.

Beautiful dog. We have three, all Shih Tzu crosses. Teia, the one featured on our blog, is quite paranoid about loud noises, particularly thunder, so summers are quite traumatic around our house.

Enjoy the unconditional love of your great pet...she will give you many years of companionship and entertainment.
