Benefits of Lycra

Lycra is a durable synthetic elastomeric fiber that revolutionized the swimsuit industry in the early 1960's. It is a registered trade mark of Invista, formerly a part of Du Pont which is well known for their scientific advances. Lycra's popularity can be attributed to its resistance to stains while holding dyes well and can stretch 500% without breaking. However, it is never used by itself in the garment industry. As a result, it is mixed with other fibers such as nylon, cotton and rayon and depending on the intended use, the quantity of Lycra ranges: The more Lycra used the more durable the fiber is. The benefits of this durable material are most prominent in Lycra bikinis. Not only do Lycra bikinis allow multi-directional stretching but they also provide optimal body pressure distribution increasing support that is uniquely soft, smooth and comfortable. Lycra bikinis are lightweight and resistant to abrasions, static electricity and unsightly pilling. Another notable characteristic of Lycra bikinis are their ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are normally found on the human body (bacteriostatic). This is primarily due to the open weave construction. Bacteria thrive in dark damp places like the seams and crotches of garments that are subject to sweat, moisture or water. Lycra inhibits this bacterial growth by rapidly removing moisture away from the skin, thereby, reducing skin irritations and infections.
